Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book my first session?

Click on the book button or go through our timetable and choose the class. Once there you'll be taken through to our payment provider and can choose whether to pay for a casual drop-in class, buy a class pack or sign up for a membership.

I've never done Pilates before, where do I start?

We love sharing our passion for Pilates with those new to it. Give us a call or send us an email and we can help guide you to the right class or private session. If you're interested in a reformer class, book into our Reformer Beginner class where you'll be looked after alongside other newbies and we'll take the time to show you how to use the equipment and the principle movements of Pilates. You can join any mat class. If you would like to use the full range of equipment, contact us for an initial consultation.

What's the difference between a class and a private session?

Our group classes are small, with a maximum of 8 clients per session, which gives our teachers the chance to look after individual needs. Classes follow a set format where each individual follows the teacher's instructions. A private session is completely tailored to your needs depending on how you feel that day — we adjust your programme accordingly with the goal of progressing your movement. Private sessions are ideal for those with injuries, post surgery or pre-surgery, as long as it has been approved by your leading healthcare provider.

Do you work with back pain, injuries or post surgery recovery?

Yes, we do. Pilates is a fantastic way to work through any rehab needs, especially in the way we teach it. We ask that you book in for a 1:1 session with us rather than a group class, especially if you are currently in pain. We also suggest you bring in any clinical notes from your lead healthcare provider so we can work collaboratively with them to ensure the safest and best outcome for you.

Can I attend if I am pregnant or just had a baby?

Yes. Our reformer beginner, reformer 1 and mat classes are suitable for pregnancy under 16 weeks. Once you're 16 weeks, we have Reformer Pregnancy classes designed to support you through this important time. Our Mums & Bubs classes are designed to support your return to strength after having a baby, and we invite non-crawling babies to join you. You must be at least 6 weeks post birth for a vaginal delivery and 12 weeks post c-section, with the all clear from your medical provider. If you have any questions, just give us a call or send us an email and we can assist you.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. We are a socks-on studio and prefer you to bring grip socks to wear on the equipment. Don't worry if you don't have any — we have some available to buy.

What is your cancellation policy?

We have a 12-hour cancellation policy. Classes cancelled 12 hours before will get the class credit back. Cancellations after 12 hours will forfeit the session. No-shows and absences will forfeit the session, so please don't no-show. If you have late cancelled and we're able to fill your spot with a waitlisted member, we'll credit back the session as a thank you for keeping the space available for others.

What if I'm running late to class?

We understand that things happen, especially with Auckland's traffic. We'll allow a grace of a couple of minutes, but after that the door will be closed and unfortunately you'll miss the session. This is to ensure that everyone is warmed up appropriately and the class isn't disrupted. Please don't be late for your first session, as we need the chance to familiarise ourselves with you and any specific needs you might have.

When should I arrive?

Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes before class starts. If this is your first time, allow yourself enough time to find a park, settle your belongings and chat with our teachers, who will show you the equipment and get you set up.

Is there parking?

There is plenty of parking on Vauxhall Road and nearby streets.

How many days a week do you recommend I do Pilates?

We recommend you attend at least twice a week to see the change and feel the difference that Pilates can make to your mind and body. If you have more time available, we recommend three sessions a week to see a faster transformation.

How old do you have to be to do Pilates?

We'll take younger clients on a case-by-case basis and recommend an initial consultation for those under 16. Those 16 and over are welcome to join our group reformer and mat classes.

Can I book your studio for an event or group sessions?

Yes, we'd love to work with you for an event — whether it's a hens, birthday, mother's day or family gathering. We also welcome enquiries from likeminded brands. Please contact us via studio@beampilates.co.nz to discuss.
